Rich Shirley was at the 9Bar Chilly Duathlon held on and around the Castle Combe circuit on 22 Feb.

Rich Shirley took part in his first competitive race of the season at the Chilly Duathlon on Sunday 24 November.

Four Dursley triathletes entered the Cotswold Sprint tri held on 7Sept. However, only two made it to the start, injury and workload putting paid to Fred Yearsley and Mel Williams’ hope of competing. It was left to Ray Williams and Jerry Fowler to battle it out. As with all good athletes, neither declared themselves enthusiastic about the challenge ahead, but once the hooter sounded they went to work.

Jerry had a great swim, coming out of the water some 7 s in front of Ray. However, in triathlons it is often the cycling and running performances that are critical. Ray pulled some time back in the first transition, managing to put Jerry off by shouting his congratulations on his ”great swim” – this made Jerry miss his cleat and nearly fall off his bike. Ray took full advantage … Both had good cycles, with Jerry averaging 21 mph and Williams 22.93 mph on the flat 20k course. They finished with a 5k run, both paying for their efforts on the bikes. Ray was able to manage a negative split, taking almost a minute and half out of Jerry. Ray’s bike and run succeeded in opening up a 4 min gap, but all credit to Jerry for making it so close.
