Rich Shirley journeyed to the Netherlands to represent the GB Team at the European Long Distance Duathlon Championships on Sunday 12 April. The event comprises two 10 km runs sandwiched between a 60 km cycle. Rich had been showing some great form both in training sessions and races before going into the Championships. And this form was reflected in the first 10 km, which he completed in 36:43, a personal best at the distance, placing him 8th after the first leg. In his own words he “smashed the bike”, averaging just under 24 miles/hour over the course. This effort moved him up to fourth coming into the second transition. He then paid for the first two efforts – unable to maintain his levels of performance over the final 10 km, he was over 6 min slower than the first run. This was still good enough to place him 8th overall and 4th GB in a time of 02:59:53. Richard Anderson (GB) won the event, finishing in a time of 02:36:49.
